Giving Basics

Defining Terms

Tithe

We often use the word tithe to refer to the regular practice of giving to the local church.

In the Old Testament, a tithe literally means “a tenth.” In many church traditions, Christians have given ten percent of their income to the local church as their tithe. While the New Testament does not command Christians to give a specific percentage to anything, it does make clear that everything we have belongs to God and giving was a part of early Christian practice.

Tithes given to Antioch Central Houston are used to support the ministries and mission of our local church, including youth and kids ministries, operations, personnel, special events, outreaches, and missions. We believe giving regularly and consistently to the local church is a beneficial spiritual practice. It helps free us from the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10), keeps our hearts aligned with God’s kingdom (Matthew 6:21), and forms in us a generosity that overflows in thanksgiving and praise to God (2 Corinthians 9:6-11). We encourage all members to make tithing a part of their spiritual walk.

Offering

We often use the word offering to refer to any other non-regular giving you make as the Lord directs.

God may lead you to give spontaneously beyond your regular giving or to set aside an amount to give later for an unplanned purpose. At our church, this can look like a collection for supporting a visiting ministry or meeting an urgent need in Lifegroup. Just like with your regular giving, offer your gifts freely and cheerfully to the Lord.

Donations

Any giving toward Antioch is considered a donation. Anything you donate to Antioch Community Church (no matter which fund you designate the money to or how you refer to it) will be included in your Year-End-Giving-Statement. All donations are tax deductible.
